In this hands-on workshop we will be introduced to sekkazome (also known as orizomegami), which is a traditional Japanese form of folding and dying paper to create a variety of colorful patterns. We will then use our newly designed papers to bind into a traditional stab-bound book.
Mystery Box Artist’s Books
It’s time to break out of your material comfort zone and think with your hands! Workshop participants will be mailed a Mini-But-Mighty Mystery Box of Materials, which must not be opened until the workshop. After a brief discussion of what defines a book and “bookness”, participants will open their boxes and make an artist’s book following three simple rules.

Sekkazome is a traditional Japanese fold-and-dye technique to create decorative papers. Create decorative papers of your own design, which will then be used in the second week to bind four traditional Japanese stab bindings.
Split-Page Books
Also known as mix-and-match books, split- page books are simple, yet compelling structures that encourage lots of hands- on engagement. In this workshop, we will examine a variety of artist-made and commercially printed examples and then make our own folded and sewn variations of split-page books.
