Japanese Bookbinding: From Tradition to Designing Your Own

  • Sitka Center for Art and Ecology Otis, OR USA (map)

Two day in-person workshop at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology.
June 3 & 4, 10am-4pm

We will begin this two-day workshop by learning to make the traditional four-hole bookbinding (known as yotsume-toji) and its three variations which are also found in classic Japanese bookbinding. On the second day, inspired by sketches of the natural environment and examples from contemporary bookbinders, participants will design and sew their own unique bindings. Participants will leave with a handsome library of five bookbinding models and the skills to design and bind many more side-sewn books of their own.
