Artist Statement

My practice is rooted in books and aspects of the book. I work primarily with paper, printmaking and drawing, exploring these ideas in 2-D, 3-D and time-based media. My core creative actions deconstruct the component parts of a whole and then engage those parts in different environments or modes of behavior to gain unique perspectives and new understanding.

My text-based drawings and sculptural objects are artifacts of my analysis of language, with an emphasis on written forms. I examine how we read, write, and recognize marks or objects as uniquely human units of communication. By stripping all but a few components, I explore the inherent patterns and irregularities in letters and words. I am also interested in how these elements of text relate to us, such as the space letters occupy or how they are the byproduct of our hand and body movements. How do we hold language? Where does all of this language go? I often think about how language lingers, moves around, and accumulates on top of itself.
